Spanish Club News

The FRA Spanish Club is off to a great start this year.  We had our first meeting September 16, 2009, where we elected officers and discussed some of our plans for the upcoming year.  Our new officers are Hannah Keowen, Presidente; Dulce Martinez, Vice-presidente; Chelsea Gonzales, Tesorero; Micah Butler, Secretario; and Spencer Miller, Historiador.  Our Director de Arte is Cody David and the chairperson of our Cinco de Mayo activities is Allison Delatte.

The day of our first meeting, coincidentally, was the same day Mexico celebrates its independence from Spain.  In Spanish, it is know as "el dieciséis de septiembre".  Some Spanish club members from our Spanish 3 class painted signs and Señora Laiche made a special announcement that morning to raise cultural awareness of this important day in Mexico.

This weekend, on October 4, we attended the "Festival Latino" at the Catholic Deaf Center in Baton Rouge.  This annual event celebrates Latin American heritage, culture and, most importantly, FOOD!  The proceeds benefit the Hispanic Apostolate of the Diocese of Baton Rouge.  Despite the rain, those who attended had a great time.  We sampled food from Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico and many other Spanish-speaking countries.  We enjoyed Honduran folk dancing and live Raggaeton music.  We are looking forward to attending again next year, and hopefully, it will not be so rainy.

The Spanish Club plans to participate in the first annual FRA Fall Fest and Hullabaloo, Saturday, October 17, by selling "Limonada" or lemonade at their booth, and volunteering in other areas.  Please come by and see us there and buy lots of delicious, gourmet Spanish Club limonada!

¡Hasta luego!
